Reiki

My Story

In 2001, when I began practising Indian Head Massage I noticed more than ever sensations of heat and tingling in my fingers whilst working.  This led me to Reiki.  I completed my Reiki Level 1 in February 2002 and, having gained some experience of using Reiki through self treatment and the treatment of friends, went on to complete Level 2 a year later.

Reiki is a treatment in itself but it can also be combined with other holistic therapies.  In my view, the holistic approach to health means using whatever you have at your disposal to encourage the body and mind back to a healthy state.  As with Reflexology and Head Massage, Reiki is an incredibly relaxing therapy and, apart from all the other benefits it brings, is a great way to relieve the effects of stress.  If you are skeptical or would simply like to understand more fully how Reiki actually works you can read The Science behind Reiki and History of Reiki by using these links.

Reiki (pronounced 'ray-key') is a Japanese word - 'rei' means universal and 'ki' means life force or energy. This ancient healing art was re-discovered in the 19th century by a Japanese priest named Dr Mikao Usui. This system of natural healing was subsequently passed on by ensuing reiki masters and is practised worldwide today.

Reiki is based upon the flow of 'ki' or energy around the body. Otherwise known as 'chi' or 'qi' in Chinese and 'prana' in Hindu, ki is the energy of life itself. Reiki clears away blockages in the flow of ki which lead to illness and stress.

An holistic form of healing, Reiki treats the physical body and the mind together, strengthening the body's own healing ability and rebalancing its energy. Reiki may be used for self-healing or to promote healing in others. It can also be used safely with other complementary therapies and there is no risk when using it alongside orthodox treatment.

Touch is a wonderful thing that can be both comforting and soothing but it can also be used to heal illnesses and bring balance and a sense of well-being into your life. Reiki is a deeply relaxing, health promoting system of hands-on energy healing. Reiki was virtually unheard of only a few short years ago but it is fast becoming one of the most recognised and popular forms of complementary therapy today.

Which conditions can Reiki treat?

Reiki can help in the healing of any condition.  There are no known contraindications.  The body has an intelligence of its own and is always trying to achieve and maintain health and balance.  Reiki helps the body’s natural energy flow which encourages healing to take place.

It helps us heal on many levels, the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual and is a marvellous for relieving stress and tension thereby encouraging deep relaxation and a feeling of peace and tranquillity.  It is not uncommon for there to be some emotional release when receiving Reiki but this is all part of the healing process and should be welcomed.

A Reiki session

During a Reiki session you may feel a number of sensations such as tingling, warmth, intense heat or cold. You may feel nothing at all during the treatment, particularly if it is the first time you have experienced Reiki, but the benefits may be felt later. Sometimes a deeper sensitivity will develop after a few sessions as you relax into the treatments. It is not unusual to fall asleep during a session.

At times emotions may surface. It is important to release these as they arise. This will help you to remain relaxed and receptive to the healing energy.

After a session

Immediately after a session has ended you may feel deeply relaxed and not want to move. Even as you become more alert, the deep sense of physical and mental calm remains. It is important to drink plenty of water after a session to help detoxify the system.

Number of sessions

Normally a minimum of 4 to 5 sessions is recommended for a lasting improvement in health or stress levels. Thereafter a session every 3 months or so should keep you in good health. However, should you feel a condition returning or that your stress levels have increased, it is advisable to have a treament as soon as possible - remember that "prevention is better than cure!'

The Five Reiki Principles

Living according to these 5 principles allows us to assist in our own healing process by changing our thought patterns for the better.  Each of these principles focuses on today.  There is no generalized target in the future, no huge challenge to overcome, just a simple promise to do our best here and now.

·        Just for today I will let go of anger

·        Just for today I will let go of worry

·        Today I will count my many blessings

·        Today I will do my work honestly

·        Today I will be kind to every living creature
