holistic therapies for animals

Things to consider

Many people are interested in using a more natural approach to maintain their pets’ health particularly those who have tried a number of different medications to no avail.

While the holistic approach may seem like a good idea, and in many cases it can be, we need to be aware that certain treatments are not only inadvisable for animals but some can be dangerous and in some cases even life threatening.

Check with the vet

For this reason it is important to seek veterinary advice and approval before embarking on any form of holistic treatment for your pet.  Hopefully your vet will support you in your desire for a more natural approach but, if not, it may be worth seeking out a vet who is more open to the idea of helping animals with holistic therapies.

Certain herbs, plants and essential oils can be toxic to pets and any responsible owner would surely want to be aware of these potentially harmful substances.  Click here for further information.

Whenever your animal appears to be unwell or suffering from any unusual symptoms, it is important to obtain an accurate diagnosis.  Your vet is in the best position to do this for you.  Guesswork is not a good idea!  Animals are not able to communicate in the same way as humans and, as a result, they may suffer a great deal in silence if the disease is not properly diagnosed and treated.

Which therapies can be utilised?

Some of the therapies that are generally safest to use with pets are Homeopathy, Bach Flower Remedies, Reiki and T-touch.  Although it is possible to treat your own animal in certain cases (provided you have sufficient knowledge of the system being used) it is always best to seek advice from, or work in conjunction with, a trained and qualified practitioner.

There are many other therapies that are used to treat animals.  They include aromatherapy, various massage techniques, acupuncture, shiatsu and many more.  It would be totally inadvisable, not to mention potentially dangerous for an unqualified person to attempt any kind of deep massage or manipulative therapy on their pet.

Gentle stroking on the other hand can be very beneficial for both you and your animal companion as long as the animal enjoys it and is not overly fearful of human contact.  By allowing your animal to come to you voluntarily and not restraining it in any way, you can be fairly sure that the experience will be an enjoyable and stress-free one for you both.  This kind of contact can help to build a deeper bond between you.

If you do decide to seek the help of a professional, be sure to check their credentials, and, as previously mentioned, make sure a vet referral has been obtained before any treatment or therapy takes place.

Where do I fit in?

Having been a human Bach Practitioner for several years, I recently decided to follow a long-held dream of mine to work with animals.  The connection we make with our pets can be a very special one.  However, sometimes the human/pet relationship can become troublesome and tense.  It is at this time that people and their pets flounder and are in need of some support.  The Bach Remedies are ideal for use in these situations.

I have now completed my training at the Natural Animal Centre in Carmarthen to become an Animal Practitioner.  If you would like to know more about how Bach Remedies can help animals, my animal website is now available for viewing and you can contact me from there for further information or to book a consultation.

I offer Bach Flower Remedies and Reiki Therapy for pets.

·                Bach Flower Remedies treat behavioural problems by tackling the root of the problem – the emotions.

·                Reiki is a form of energy healing which has a calming and beneficial effect and to which animals generally respond well.  Please read the The Science behind Reiki here for a more in-depth explanation of how the therapy works.

The bond I have with my own dog, Spud, is a most rewarding and special part of my life. Like any other relationship it needs to be nurtured and based on understanding and mutual trust.  Animals, just like us, have their ups and downs emotionally.  We have to learn to respect their feelings and understand that they need sometimes need help too.

My desire is to help others find a better connection with their pets and build a more mutually satisfying relationship.
